Why Has God Abandoned Me? (Through the Psalms)

How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me? ^Psalm 13:1 (Click to read entire Psalm)

Wow. What a raw and honest confession from the mouth of David. David is under so much pain and stress that he begins to question the faithfulness of God. David feels like God has abandoned him and has left him to himself. This Psalm is not a plea for information; this is a plea for God’s divine presence and friendship to be restored.

Have you ever felt that way?

You are praying and you are trying but God feels so distant. You are doing what is right and are seeking the face of God, but the response? Silence. What do you do in these moments? The same thing David did, “But I have trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because he has dealt bountifully with me” (Psalm 13:5).

What just happened? In v. 1 David is questioning God and in v. 5 David starts to praise God! What caused this transition? What moved David from despair to worship? When David couldn't feel God, he choose to trust God. Though David desired a tangible presence of the Holy Spirit, when He couldn't feel the Lord, he chose to trust in the character of God. “But I have trusted in your steadfast love.” The steadfast love of God is more than enough for David to praise Him. Whether he feels it or not, this confidence in the love of God allows him to break out of his current state.
