I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD! ^Psalm 27:13-14 (Click to read entire Psalm)

What gets people through hard times? What enables people to persevere through the most trying of times in life? Hope.

Hope is one of the most powerful sources of strength and courage known to humanity. Hope has an extraordinary ability to empower people to get through the most difficult times of life.

David is pulling courage and strength into his present reality by reaching out to hope.

David says, “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.” I shall look is written in the future tense. David is being attacked by an army that is looking to devour and kill him. He seems to be outnumbered by his adversaries but yet he finds his confidence in trusting in the Lord.

David has hope that God will deliver him and he will be victorious.

A step deeper.

How does hope work best? With patience.

Hope is empowered by patience. While faith is for today, hope is for tomorrow. Many people cannot experience the power of hope because impatience. While faith is necessary, it has it’s proper place. We cannot force God to change our circumstances. However, we can trust God and lean into hope coupled with patience when today’s challenges are overwhelming.

David says, “Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” David combines his hope in the LORD with hope. Hope and patience together can overcome every obstacle that is thrown our way.

May we put our hope and trust in the LORD!
