Serving Jesus (Through the Gospels)

So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments, that nothing may be lost. ^John 6:13

When we serve Jesus, Jesus will serve us.

The disciples just finished passing out food for the 5,000, which does not include the women and children. As they were serving the crowds who were hungry and weary, the narrative ends with there being 12 baskets left over.

Why 12 baskets? Jesus made sure He fed the disciples as they were feeding the crowd. 12 baskets means there was 1 basket left for each disciple.

When you live and serve the Lord by being generous and sacrificial towards others, God will make sure to take care of your needs. The Bible makes it clear that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Why? Because when we give to others, Jesus gives to us. The way to receive from God is to make sure you live a generous life. On the contrast, the one preserves him or herself will lose themselves.

I wonder what went through the minds of the disciples as they sat with a full basket to themselves. I wonder if Jesus was trying to tell them, “As long as you living for me, I will take care of all your needs.”
