What Made David Different from all other Kings? (Through the Psalms)

One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to insure in his temple. ^Psalm 27:4

What separated David from all other kings? What made David great in the eyes of the LORD? It was his love for God. If there was one thing that separated David from all the kings before and after him was his passion for the Lord.

Here in Psalm 27 David is expressing the longing of his soul; to be in the presence of God. The one thing that David desires above all else is to dwell in God’s presence and to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord.

David is very particular with his choice of words here. He makes it clear this is the one thing that he desires. What does this mean? Does this mean he has no other desires? No. It means that his desire for the Lord supersedes all of his other desires. It means that among the many things he wants, he wants God the most. David has a longing to be intimate and near with the Lord.

What also makes this special is that this is not a seasonal desire, but a lifetime goal. David confesses, “that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life.” This is not a momentary passion that dies overnight. This is a lifetime goal for David, all the days of my life. David wants to dwell in the personal presence of God every single moment for the rest of his life!

So how can you and I join David in his pursuit of God?

  1. Find a time of solitude on a regular (daily) basis to dive into prayer and God’s Word.

  2. Acknowledge God wherever you are and whoever you are with. Say short and simple prayers to the Lord all throughout the day. Prayers such as, “Thank you Lord”, “I love You Lord”, “I welcome You here Lord”, “I acknowledge You are here with me.”

  3. Confess your utter need and dependence on Him throughout the day.
