Worship a Response to God's Goodness (Through the Psalms)

I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. ^Psalm 9:1

Worship is not merely singing, clapping and dancing. Worship is much deeper than what outward expressions capture. Worship is the human heart responding to the goodness of God. Worship happens when someone has a personal revelation of who God is or recognizes how present God has been in their lives.

David is not thanking God in this Psalm because it is what is required of him. David is not thanking God because he knows this is the right thing to do. No. David has a revelation that God has been so intimately and personally involved in His life. And as a response, David cannot help but thank and praise God for how good He has been.

This is what happens when we truly experience God. We cannot help but want to give back to Him. As a response to His goodness we ought to offer our hearts back to God. What does this mean? What does it mean to offer God our hearts? It means to offer to God what is most valuable to us. To offer our whole hearts to God is to give God our most treasured possessions and tell Him He is worthy of all that we are.

  1. How has God been moving in your life? Sometimes we have to stop, get quiet and let our hearts recount all of his wonderful deeds.

  2. What does it look like for you to bring God your whole heart? This looks different for everyone for we all have different things we treasure.
