Jesus' First Sermon: Repentance (Through the Gospels)

“Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” ^Matthew 4:17 (Click to read entire passage).

After 30 years of preparation and training, Jesus finally begins his public ministry. What will be the first thing He does as the Savior of the world? What will be the first message He preaches?

The first thing that Jesus does in His public ministry is to preach on repentance.

Of all the things that Jesus could have done and said, why preach on repentance? Because everything else follows from a foundation of repentance. A life of repentance is the foundation of a true Christian life. A Christian who does not repent, does not understand him or herself. They are blind to themselves and cannot see how deeply sinful they are. A man who stands before the presence of God will have revelation of their sinfulness and will be moved to repentance.

But Jesus specifically says the reason why we must repent is because, “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” We are in a new era. With the coming of our King, His Kingdom has invaded our earth. We can no longer remain complacent. A decision has to be made if His Kingdom is truly here. The coming of our Lord and Savior forces us to make a choice.

The question is not is Jesus King over this world, but is Jesus King over your life? The only place that He will not force Himself to rule and reign is the center of your heart and affections. This is why Jesus gives us the command but also a choice. He commands us to repent but will allow us to choose. Will you repent today and make Him King over your life? If you do, you will experience His Kingdom power rule and reign in your life!
