What Are You Doing With Your Money? (Through the Gospels)

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal” ^Matthew 6:19-20.

In essence, we have two bank accounts. One on earth and one in heaven. The paychecks we receive from work goes into our earthly accounts. The things we give unto the Lord, goes directly into our heavenly accounts.

Jesus is talking about both of these accounts in this passage. Jesus wants us to know that our earthy accounts are temporary while our heavenly accounts are eternal. This does not mean that what we do on earth and how we handle our earthly possessions do not matter. In fact, Jesus is saying is the exact opposite. What we do on earth and how we handle our possessions is directly related to what happens in the Kingdom.

When we use our earthly riches to bless and love others, we store riches in heaven. Loving God and others with our wealth stores our bank account in heaven! God has given riches to Christians not to be hoarded but to be used as a channel of blessing to others.

What are you doing with what God has blessed with you? Are you splurging and saving in order for you to have a luxurious life? Or are you saving and giving in order to bless others and advance God’s Kingdom? I encourage you today to think deeply and pray earnestly to God. Ask Him how you can spend what He has given you to advance His Kingdom and store your riches in heaven!
