How Can I Follow Jesus? (Through the Gospels)

"As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, 'Follow me.' And he rose and followed him" ^Matthew 9:9.

What a fascinating passage. What prompted Matthew to just leave his tax booth and follow Jesus? All Jesus said was, “Follow me.”

The only explanation I can think of is God’s captivating grace. There must have been an irresistible pull in the heart of Matthew that said to himself, “I must go; I must follow.” There must have been an inescapable pull in his heart that made him leave everything to follow Jesus.

This must also happen to you. When someone truly encounters Jesus, following Him isn’t really an option. The beauty of Christ captivates the eyes of the beholder. In many ways, following Christ is the only proper response to seeing Christ. When you see Him, you cannot help but want Him. I have heard many people say that they had a moment when they chose to follow Jesus. The emphasis being on their decision.

Similarly, one may presume that Matthew has decided to follow Jesus. However, when I look at Matthew’s response to the two simple words, “Follow me”, I don’t believe Matthew simply chose to follow Jesus, but rather he was captivated by Jesus. Matthew could not help but follow Jesus. The person and beauty of Christ compelled him.

Are you trying to follow Jesus? Can I encourage you? Rather than focusing on how you can follow Him, focus on His face. As you see how beautiful He truly is, your heart will be undone by His glory. Following Jesus is about seeing and responding to who He is. God bless you.
