Giving Your Anxiety to God (Through the Gospels)

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” Matthew 6:25

What is the answer to anxiety? Putting God first.

If you trace your anxieties down to its’ source, it will lead you to your idol. Similar to tracing smoke down to a fire, tracing your greatest fears and anxieties will lead you to your idols.

Anxiety is a result of putting your trust, hope and worth in something other than God. When you place something above God, it has the ability to control our deepest emotions. This is why Jesus says, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).

The answer to overcoming anxiety is to seek God’s Kingdom above everything else. Jesus is talking to Jewish followers who were worried about what to wear, what eat and what to drink. They were concerned with earthly things rather than trusting in the God who provides all things.

Jesus charges them to take their eyes off their lack, and place their eyes on God the Father who is madly in love with them. He encourages these followers to remember that the God who created the heavens and the earth is their heavenly Father who is in control.

Are you struggling with anxiety? Trace is down to its root. Why does that thing, person or situation get you anxious? It is likely that you have placed it above the Lord. Put it in its right place and exalt Jesus over your anxiety. When you seek Him and put Him first, your anxiety will subside and the peace of God will rule you heart.
