Do Unto Others What You Want Done to You (Through the Gospels)
You reap what you sow. Whatever you do unto others, the same will be done unto you. If you cut people off, people will cut you off. If you are short with people, people will begin to be short with you.
The way that people treat you can be a reflection of how you treat others. I have had friends who were confused by the shortness that others were showing them. I’ve seen people with big egos and attitude problems that get confused when their friends no longer want to hang out with them. They do not realize that what you do unto others, will be done back to you in some shape or form.
Jesus is giving Kingdom wisdom here. The wisdom is, do unto others what you want them to do to you. “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them” (Matthew 7:12). If you want people to be generous towards you then be generous to them. If you want people to be gracious with you, be gracious with them. However, the motivation here is obedience to God’s Word.
As Christians we are not supposed to give to others with the expectation to receive something back. We give to others because Christ has given His all to us. Jesus says, “For this is the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 7:12). The reason why we do good and show love to others, is ultimately a reflection of our obedience to God. The Law and the Prophets are the Old Testament Scriptures full of commands to love people.
Today, show love and grace to others. In wisdom know that every good thing you do unto others, will be given back to you. However, in love, regardless of what your return is, do it because you want to obey the Lord.
