The Harvest is Plentiful (Through the Gospels)

"Then he said to his disciples, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest’” ^Matthew 9:9:37-39

What made Jesus continue in ministry? What moved Jesus to heal the sick and cast out demons? Why did Jesus continue to pour Himself out to a people that He knew was going to reject Him? It tells us here, “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd” (Matthew 9:36). The reason why Jesus did everything He did was because of love.

When the disciples saw the 5,000 they saw crowds, Jesus saw faces. When the disciples saw multitudes, Jesus saw names. Jesus could not escape their needs because His love for them. Jesus could not help but give Himself completely to the point of death on a Cross, because He had compassion on them.

Jesus wants us to do the same. Jesus sees the crowds and tells the disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:39). Jesus wants his disciples to open their eyes and see that the world is lost without Him. Jesus wants us to know that there are hundreds, thousands and millions of people who are thirsty for the living water.

But what’s the problem? We are not telling them where they can find this water. Jesus has passed the baton to us. Jesus has entrusted us to finish what He began. The world is ready to hear about Jesus. The world is ripe which means that the world is ready. The question is are you ready? Are you and I ready to share the good news. Are you and I motivated by love? Does the love of God compel us like it compelled Jesus? Let’s pray today that God would move you and His people to share about the love of Jesus to those around them. God bless you.
