When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you” ^Matthew 10:19-20

The Holy Spirit is able to supernaturally give God’s people wisdom, knowledge and understanding that is not from themselves. The Holy Spirit is a real person that has a personality and ability to give us deep spiritual understanding.

Among the many things the Holy Spirit does, He can give us words of wisdom to be able to bear witness to the things of Christ. Whenever a Christian finds him or herself in a situation trying to witness to others about Jesus, if he or she yields to the Lord, the Holy Spirit can give them words to speak.

I have had this happen to me on many occasions. I have asked the Lord to give me words and wisdom when trying to tell others about Jesus. I have even had moments where people attacked my faith and God started giving me words to speak! I knew it wasn’t from me because there was no way I could think that fast nor have that wisdom.

This is what Jesus is talking about in this passage. The disciples were going to soon face intense persecution for the gospel. Jesus tells them that in these moments not to be afraid of what they will say for the Holy Spirit will give them words. This is not talking about “preaching” but rather giving defense to why they believe in Jesus. Jesus is not saying here not to prepare what to say if you are going to preach a sermon. No. He is teaching them how to rely on Him when they find themselves in unprecedented circumstances.

In the same way, if you ever find yourself lacking words and wisdom, ask the Holy Spirit to help you. Ask Him to speak to you. Ask Him to guide you. As you open yourself up to His leading, you will be surprised at how real He is. God bless you.
